Our tailored activity days and residential trips for Education or PGCE students and teaching staff are designed to facilitate and broaden direct experience of bringing classroom teaching outdoors.

What's it all about?

Outdoor learning and residential experiences can produce powerful outcomes for children and young people. These include fostering deeper relationships with their teachers and fellow pupils, improving pupils' resilience, self-confidence and well being, and increasing pupil engagement with learning.

Despite these outcomes, teachers are not provided with the skills and knowledge to confidently take learning into the outdoors. To help with this, we offer a Teacher Training programme aimed towards Education or PGCE students, and a Outdoor Learning CPD programme designed for qualified teachers and school staff.

What can your expect to learn?

We support trainee teachers and qualified teachers in overcoming the barriers to teaching and learning in natural environments. This is achieved by developing teachers' confidence, competence and self-efficacy for delivery high quality lessons in the outdoors.

The Teacher Training and Outdoor Learning CPD programmes include the following outcomes:

  • Understanding the potential risks of outdoor learning and how those risks can be mitigated effectively

  • Exploring how the National Curriculum can be successfully linked to learning outdoors, including ideas for activities and lessons

  • Designing and experiencing practical learning activities

  • Successfully identifying the desired outcomes of an outdoor learning session and how to measure its impact

What are the length of the programmes?

Our Teacher Training programme designed for Education or PGCE students can be delivered in 1 - 2 full days, with an optional overnight and catering.

Our Outdoor Learning CPD programme is 2 days in length, with an overnight stay and catering, and run on specific dates within the academic year. The programme delivers 12 hours of CPD, and all participants will receive an Outdoor Learning CPD certificate as evidence.

Case Study: De Montfort University, Leicester

Read about our Teacher Training day with the Education Studies Students at De Montfort University, in Leicester. The undergraduate students travelled to Derbyshire for an immersive outdoor learning experience, designed to provide the students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to take groups of children or young people on outdoor-based school trips.

We had a BRILLIANT time! The trip was a fantastic success and thanks so much for all the work you did putting it together. Bernie and Charlee were both absolutely wonderful and really understood exactly what we were hoping to achieve with the experience.
